With low tempos being a defining feature of its sound, the primacy of the riff is what sets doom metal apart from its extreme bedfellows. If Swedish exponents Monolord who rose to prominence with their 2015 monsterpiece "Vaenir" by demonstrating their aptitude for creating a memborable riff, this extraordinary single is going to elevate them to at least demigod status within the metal fraternity. "Lord Of Suffering" is driven by a crushing slab of six-string brilliance from guitarist Thomas Jäger that must have given him a sense of achievement similar to Tony Iommi's after he'd just written the riff to "Iron Man". I could witter on at great length about the excellence of B-side "Die In Haze" too but perhaps I should leave that for you to discover.
